Iowa high school state XC: North's Gutema, Heelan's Bertrand crack top ten

Sioux City North freshman Kuma Gutema and Bishop Heelan senior Addison Bertrand led the pack in their respective races and added to an impressive outing from Siouxland runners at the Iowa High School State Cross Country Championships.

With one just getting started in the prep XC scene and the other making a statement in her final race, Gutema and Bertrand each took seventh in their respective races Tuesday in Fort Dodge.

Gutema finished the Class 4A boys race in 15 minutes and 33 seconds, missing out on the top five by 1.7 seconds. The young phenom entered his first year with the Stars surrounded by expectations and ended as the youngest runner in the top 30 at the state meet.

Bertrand capped off her career with the Crusaders with a top ten finish in the 3A girls race, finishing the course in 18 minutes and 47 seconds. She jumped 31 spots from her finish last season at the state meet, with 49 seconds shaved off from her performance as a junior.

Two Siouxland area teams joined Bertrand in the 3A race, with Sioux Center finishing runner up and MOC-Floyd Valley taking ninth.

The Warriors were led by sophomores Audrina Jones (19 minutes and 24 seconds) and Molly Iskason (19 minutes and 26 seconds), who took 21st and 22nd overall, respectively.

Junior Kolby Oldenkamp (19 minutes and 51 seconds), freshman Macyn VanAartsen (19 minutes and 54 seconds) and senior Corinne McCord (20 minutes and 39 seconds) rounded out Sioux Center's top five finishers.

The Dutch were led by sophomore Natalie Anderson, who took ninth overall with a time of 18 minutes and 58 seconds. She was proceeded by junior Kienna Lassen (19:27), seniors Sarah May (20:03) and Elin Vam Der Werff (21:48), and freshman Morgan Cleveringa (22:01) to lead to team to a top 10 finish.

Sioux Center and MOC-Floyd Valley also took part in the 3A boy's race, with the former finishing 13th and the latter taking 11th.

The Dutchmen were led by sophomore Isaac Hummel, who finished the course in 16 minutes and 53 seconds. Senior Micah Schmidt (17:12), junior Thatcher Doughan (17:13) and seniors Ian Van Der Werff (17:48) and Gerrit Hulstein (18:03) rounded out the team's top five finishers.

Freshman Matthew Dahm finished first for Sioux Center, and 18th overall with a time of 16 minutes and 30 seconds.

Individual finishes

3A girls: Spencer senior Peyton Morey (19:43), 34th overall. Boyden-Hull senior Elyse Zwart (19:43), 36th overall. Storm Lake junior Silvia Kampbell finished 49th with a time of 20 minutes and one second.

3A boys: Spirit Lake junior Joel Ramirez-Parra took 26th overall with a time of 16 minutes and 40 seconds. Bishop Heelan senior Andres Gonzalez (17:20), 68th overall. Spencer junior Rylei Koppie (17:36), 87th overall. Le Mars senior Aaron Lee (17:47), 95th overall.
