ROCHESTER, Minn. - Brighter Tomorrows got the community together to support their cause of helping families whose children have cancer. Organizers hosted a cornhole tournament and also had a raffle at the Eagles Club.
They expected to raise around $20,000-$25,000 from the tournament. It will go towards their programs such as providing monthly get togethers for families and providing financial assistance for things like groceries and gasoline.
Liz Canan founded the non-profit with three other moms after her son Will was diagnosed with a brain tumor at the age of 6. He died when he was 14. Canan says when families can connect with each other who are going through similar situations it's cathartic.
"Bringing people together they can really share very openly in a very safe space with other people who can understand and there's no judgment," said Canan.
Carla Brunsvold is a board member at Brighter Tomorrows and says when kids have fun it let's them forget about the diseases they're going through.
"We did an event this summer where we brought them out to a riding stable and they got to ride horses and have a picnic and play with bubbles and play yard games and just be kids," said Canan.
