How the College Football Playoff schedule works with 12 teams

A few weeks remain in the regular season of college football, and more details about the College Football Playoffs will emerge.

While millions will be monitoring the results of the general election this evening, others will wait to see who are the top six teams in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Previous years have seen a four-team playoff system, but this is the first year when the CFP expanded to 12 teams; five teams will qualify automatically.

Four of the highest-ranked teams in the CFP will receive first-round byes and be seeded first through fourth. If the Group of Five champion is not in the top 12 teams in the final poll, it will take the No. 12 spot.

After those are set, the seven at-large teams will get in making up seeds five-12. No. 5 will host No. 12; No. 6 will host No. 11; No. 7 will host No. 10; and No. 8 will host No. 9. Those teams will play in the first round of the CFP with higher-seeded teams playing on their home field (or a field of their choosing) Dec. 20-21.

Playoff-round winners will play teams who had a bye for games on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Those games are the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Sugar Bowl.

There will be no "reseeding" in the CFP.

The four winners will play in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 9 and the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 10. The season concludes in Atlanta on Monday, Jan. 20 for the National Championship.

The first team likely to get into the CFP is undefeated, No. 1 Oregon (9-0 overall, 6-0 Big Ten).

The first College Football Playoff rankings of the 2024 season will be released Tuesday, Nov. 5 with the Ducks likely topping the list. The new top 25 rankings will be released every Tuesday through Dec. 3.

There is a CFP selection show on Dec. 8 to announce the full 12-team playoff field.

With the first projected rankings complete, the No. 1 seed is Oregon (9-0 overall).

The first team out is No. 13 SMU (8-1 overall, 5-0) and No. 14 Texas A&M (7-2 overall, 5-1) is the second team out.
