22 September 2024, Aden, Yemen - The World Health Organization (WHO) and Ministry of Public Health and Population (MoPHP) joined to launch the Yemen National Quality of Health Care Strategy 2025-30, a landmark initiative that aims to improve the quality and safety of health services across the country and ensure equitable access to services.
While addressing critical gaps in the delivery of health care in Yemen, the Strategy will:
enable effective governance of health service quality;
build efficient health information systems for the quality of care data; and
foster comprehensive engagement of communities, patients and stakeholders.
The Strategy seeks to improve health outcomes, reduce adverse events, improve patients' experience and enhance the health and well-being of all Yemenis in the face of ongoing challenges that include conflict, poverty and limited health care infrastructure.
"This strategy marks an important milestone for health care in Yemen. It is an essential part of our national recovery and development. By investing in the quality of health services, we invest in the future of our nation and the well-being of our people," said Minister of Public Health and Population Dr Qasem Buhaibeh.
"The National Quality Strategy represents an important step towards rebuilding Yemen's health system. It focuses on improving the quality of care in hospitals, clinics and health centres, ensuring that every citizen has access to safe and effective health services," said WHO Representative and Head of Mission in Yemen Dr Arturo Pesigan.
"The quality of health care enables the protection of individuals from risks, improves access to services that are effective, and helps in achieving universal health coverage that is safe and human-centred."
WHO will continue to work with the MoPHP and other stakeholders to ensure the successful rollout of the strategy.
In a concerted efforts spanning seven years, WHO and MoPHP have collaborated closely with the World Bank's International Development Association (IDA) to strengthen Yemen's health system.
The collaboration aims to address immediate health needs while laying the foundation for a resilient and equitable health system that serves all Yemenis. Now, under the Emergency Human Capital Project (EHCP), key action areas include sustaining essential support to hospitals and improving the quality of care that patients receive.
