James Harden has built a tremendous reputation for his ability to put the ball in the basket. From his early days in Oklahoma City to his prime days with the Houston Rockets, "The Beard" has been known as one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA. However, despite his offensive prowess, Harden has often faced criticism for his lack of effort on the defensive end.
Now playing in his 16th season in the league, Harden recently spoke about showing up on that end of the floor, especially for a Clippers squad that prides itself on playing lockdown defense.
He showed his defensive savvy
The 2018 league MVP showed his commitment on defense early in the game against the San Antonio Spurs, coming up with four consecutive deflections that resulted in a 24-second shot-clock violation. When asked about that particular play, Harden said it all boils down to being willing to do whatever it takes to help his team get the win.
"I'm trying to win, and I feel like I don't want to let the guys down by not showing up on both ends of the ball," the former Arizona State star said.
A top-10 defense
With the Clippers' roster lacking the same explosive firepower as in previous years, they have had to rely on relentless defense to carry them this season. It has worked so far, with the team ranking seventh in defensive rating to help them to a 3-4 record.
Harden surmised that part of being the team's leader also involves setting an example on the defensive end.
"Every single night, I want to be great. Some nights, I might fall a little short, but the effort has to be there from me because I know these guys are bringing that effort. In year 16, I want to show them that I can still try to compete at the highest level," James remarked.
