Seahawks activate Jerrick Reed II off IR, elevate 2 CBs off practice squad

The Seahawks filled out their 53-man roster Saturday by activating safety Jerrick Reed II off Injured Reserve.

Reed fills a spot created when the Seahawks waived safety Ty Okada earlier in the week. Okada cleared waivers and was re-signed to the practice squad on Friday.

Reed, a sixth-round pick in 2023 out of New Mexico, has not played since suffering an ACL injury against the Rams last Nov. 19.

He returned to practice on Oct. 15 and was listed as a full participant this week, deemed healthy to play.

Reed being back on the roster indicates he will be active for Sunday's 1:05 p.m. game against Buffalo to serve as a fourth safety behind Julian Love, Coby Bryant and K'Von Wallace and also play special teams. Reed had nine special-teams tackles in 10 games last season to rank third on the Seahawks.

The Seahawks also elevated two players off the practice squad: cornerbacks Josh Jobe and Faion Hicks.

Each was also elevated for last Sunday's 34-14 win at Atlanta when Seattle played without Riq Woolen and Tre Brown, who were out with ankle injuries. Jobe started at cornerback alongside Devon Witherspoon and Nehemiah Pritchett.

Brown and Pritchett are listed as questionable for Sunday's game. Pritchett did not practice Friday, indicating he may be a long shot to play.

Brown was a full participant in practice and coach Mike Macdonald said he is "trending positively for the game."

But if Pritchett can't go, Jobe could serve as the de facto fourth cornerback and Hicks as the fifth, with both also playing on special teams.

Jobe is a third-year player out of Alabama signed by Seattle to the practice squad in August after he was released by the Eagles. He had six tackles and two pass defenses against the Falcons.

Offensive line staying the same

What Seattle didn't do Saturday is activate offensive tackle George Fant off of Injured Reserve, meaning the Seahawks will not only go with the same starting five on the line as last week but the same OL contingent on their active roster.

Fant returned to practice this week, having not played since the season opener on Sept. 8 against Denver due to a knee issue.

Macdonald said Friday that rookie Michael Jerrell will again start at right tackle. Jerrell, a sixth-round pick out of Division II University of Findlay in Ohio, got his first NFL start and offensive snaps against Atlanta.

Macdonald, though, also said Fant had a "great week" of practice, appearing to indicate he could be activated if needed.

Seattle instead will now wait at least another week before activating Fant.

With Fant, Stone Forsythe (on IR with hand injury) and Abraham Lucas (still on the Physically Unable to Perform list) all out, Seattle has no other healthy players on its 53-man roster officially listed as tackles other than Jerrell and Charles Cross, the starter on the left side.

However, undrafted rookie free agent Jalen Sundell -- who is listed as a center -- played at left tackle during his senior season at North Dakota State, and general manager John Schneider said on his pregame radio show on Seattle Sports 710 last week that Sundell would be the other right tackle.

Jerrell, though, played all 60 snaps against the Falcons, and the Seahawks could be counting on him to go all the way again against the Bills.

"Mike's going to start again and we're confident in him," Macdonald said Friday. "He has had another really good week of practice and the message to him is like, 'Hey, all the people that said you couldn't play last week are the same ones saying that you're really great this week.' So, no offense, but the only opinion that really matters is the guys that are playing next to you at this point. You owe it to them to keep preparing and keep doing the things you do that put you in this spot to let us go win a football game. So everything you got is what we need again and we're ready to roll.'"

Seattle not elevating any receivers also means that if DK Metcalf, who is doubtful with a knee injury, is unable to play then the Seahawks will go with Tyler Lockett, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jake Bobo, Laviska Shenault Jr., and Dareke Young.

QBs get work imitating Josh Allen

Seattle's big defensive task Sunday is containing dual-threat Buffalo QB Josh Allen, who has 3,790 career rushing yards in 101 games, including 179 yards on 38 carries this season. Just as critical are the passing gains Allen creates on the run.

Macdonald said Seattle used backup quarterbacks Sam Howell and Jaren Hall -- each good runners -- to simulate Allen in practice on the scout team this week.

"First I give credit to Sam and Jaren -- they did a great job extending plays and making us work on defense as well," Macdonald said. "Our receivers have run a lot more this week than most weeks. I think you have to rush as one, you can't take the liberties that sometimes you might be able to take versus another quarterback.

"And then I would just say eye discipline down the field as plays extend, connecting to receivers when you're in the zone, when you're in man, staying with the guy, understanding how you relate to the receiver and the quarterback. So all the extended play rules really come into play and it really matters in order to have a successful play. And again, you could bat .900 in a game like this and that's not good enough. You have got to do it every time."
