Thursday's high school roundup: Scarborough opens volleyball playoffs by sweeping South Portland

Sixth-seeded Scarborough rode big service runs in each set to beat No. 11 South Portland in a Class A volleyball preliminary round contest, 25-22, 25-13, 25-20.

The Red Storm (7-8) advance to face No. 3 Gorham in the quarterfinals Saturday. The teams met a year ago in the state championship match.

Izzy Harmon and Natale Philibert helped Scarborough overcome a big deficit to win the first set. Olivia Ingream and Madi Clements both had 6-0 service runs in the second set, and Clemens again served up six straight points in the third set to erase a 19-14 deficit.

The Red Riots finished 6-9.

YARMOUTH 3, WESTBROOK 0: Ella Cameron recorded 15 kills and Laila Brewer had eight assists to help the third-seeded Clippers (11-4) sweep a Class B prelim against the No. 14 Blue Blazes (8-7) in Yarmouth, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23.

The defending state champions will host a quarterfinal against No. 6 Falmouth at 11 a.m. Saturday.

THORNTON ACADEMY 48, SANFORD 0: Wyatt Benoit rushed for three touchdowns and Mauricio Sunderland added a pair of TD runs - all in the first half - as the Golden Trojans (6-2) rolled past the Spartans (1-7) in Sanford.

Benoit scored on runs of 7, 16 and 42 yards. Sunderland opened the scoring with a 10-yard run and went in from the 4 in the second quarter.

Connor Ayoob and Alex Roenisch each had a TD run in the second half.
