Wyoming High School Spring Sports Changes for 2025

The new high school Spring Sports season is underway in Wyoming. Last weekend, the 2025 campaign debuted with track meets, soccer matches, and softball games. Soon, spring golf and tennis will join the schedule. There are a few changes to know for 2025. First, there are teams in different classifications. Second, there are new teams and conferences in softball. Lastly, two state championship venue locations are different for the next two years.

The only difference on the pitch is Green River is now in Class 4A. The Wyoming High School Activities Association's (WHSAA) enrollment structure means the Wolves rejoined the top class. That puts 15 teams in Class 4A. Eight are in the West Conference and seven are in the East Conference. Twelve schools are in Class 3A, and the conferences are balanced with six teams each. The 4A regional soccer tournaments will be in Gillette (4A East) and Green River (4A West) on May 15-17, 2025. The state championships are in Gillette for the next two years. This year's state soccer tournament is from May 22 through May 24.

Three new schools have started varsity softball teams this year. Welcome to Jackson, Sheridan, and Torrington. That means 16 teams are playing softball during the spring high school season. For the first time, the conferences have changed with the addition of the three new schools. After playing East-West for the first four years, it is now North and South. The North Conference has Campbell County, Cody, Jackson, Kelly Walsh, Natrona County, Sheridan, Thunder Basin, and Worland. The South Conference will be Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Cheyenne South, Green River, Laramie, Rock Springs, Torrington, and Wheatland.

The conferences are divided into four quadrants. This only pertains to the schedule. Teams play the other three in their quad home and away. They play the other four teams from the other quad just once. The first game of each meeting will count toward the conference standings. That equates to ten (10) conference games for each school. The Northwest is Cody, Jackson, Kelly Walsh, and Natrona County. The Northeast is Campbell County, Sheridan, Thunder Basin, and Worland. The Southwest is Cheyenne South, Green River, Laramie, and Rock Springs. The Southeast is Cheyenne Central, Cheyenne East, Torrington, and Wheatland. Here is an example. Cody will play Jackson, KW, and NC twice (home and away), but Campbell County, Sheridan, Thunder Basin, and Worland only once for conference games. Also new this year are regional tournaments where teams will qualify for state. No longer will it be the top four in each conference advancing. The regional tournaments will be on May 16-17 in Casper (North - NC hosts) and Laramie (South). For the first time, the state championships will be in Cheyenne over the next two years. The 2025 state championships are May 22-24.

The only difference for outdoor track and field for the next two years is the new enrollment structure. It moves teams into different classifications. Burns and Cody are now in 3A. Moorcroft and Thermopolis are competing in 2A. Finally, Lingle-Ft. Laramie and Lusk are now in Class 1A. It is like the breakdowns for volleyball and basketball earlier this school sports year.

The regional track and field meets are in Torrington (1A/2A East), Shoshoni (1A/2A West), Buffalo (3A East), Powell (3A West), Evanston (4A West), and Gillette (4A East - Campbell County). The 2025 Wyoming High School Track and Field State Championships are in Casper at Harry Geldien Stadium on May 22-24.

The spring golf and tennis seasons start practice on March 31, 2025. They can hold their first spring contests next week, as well.

Good luck to all the student-athletes in spring sports around Wyoming!
