For some time, Google has used Gemini models in all its products and services. The company is one of the pioneers in the AI segment, establishing itself among its top names. However, Google is not satisfied and continues to power its services through artificial intelligence, now bringing Gemini-powered summaries to Google Chat.
The company promotes Google Chat as a messaging platform for everyone, although it is better known in the professional field. Now, as part of the Workspace suite, Google Chat is also receiving new features thanks to Gemini.
The developers of AI-powered services found that these types of tools are quite efficient for summaries. Artificial intelligence can provide you with more concise versions of content, enhancing your productivity in your daily tasks. Services such as Gmail already support Gemini-powered summaries (if you have the compatible add-on). Gemini is even able to generate text summaries of your Google Meet video calls.
Now, Gemini will also be able to generate summaries of your Google Chat conversations. The new feature will also be especially useful for getting a quick overview of pending messages in groups. Have you ever left dozens (or hundreds) of pending messages in a Google Chat group? Well, Gemini will make things easier for you. In fact, it would be wonderful if other messaging apps received a similar feature since having groups full of unread messages is a fairly common situation.
Like other Gemini-powered features in Workspace services, both individual users and enterprise account admins will be able to enable or disable Gemini summaries at their convenience. Admin users can do so from the Admin console, while individual users will find the option in the "Smart features and personalization in other Google products" section of the Settings menu.
It's noteworthy that the feature is not free. Those interested will need to subscribe to a Gemini add-on or compatible plan. These include Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, and AI Meetings & Messaging. The feature is rolling out, but Google warns it may take up to 15 days to appear in your account.
Once the feature is available, you can summarize Google Chat conversations on the web and app. Just open the context menu on a conversation or group with unread messages (hover on the web, long press on the mobile app), and choose "Summarize."
