Experience last-minute eclipse hotel cancellations? You may be eligible for a refund

Were your Buffalo eclipse hotel reservations abruptly canceled before the big day? You may be able to receive a refund.

New York Attorney General Letitia James announced Friday refunds for people who had their Aloft Buffalo Airport Hotel reservations canceled last minute ahead of April's total solar eclipse.

"Many people were excited to see the total solar eclipse in the Buffalo area and booked their stay months in advance, but the Aloft Buffalo Airport soured their experience with last-minute cancellations," James said. "My office worked with consumers to secure refunds for these canceled reservations, and now, we're delivering this money back to them, and ensuring that Aloft improves its customer service so this doesn't happen again."

In March, the AG's office received many complaints about Aloft canceling people's reservations for the April eclipse without letting them know. Often, individuals didn't find out until they checked their accounts. And while the AG's office was able to reinstate some of the reservations, the hotel continued to cancel reservations without properly informing those affected.

In some cases, the hotel staff treated people who were upset with having their reservation canceled at the last minute rudely.

How to get a refund

Aloft is required to pay $9,000 in refunds to around a dozen people who had to book other hotel rooms or accommodations at a higher rate because of the sudden cancellations.

If you didn't receive a refund, the AG's office says to be sure to file a complaint with them online by visiting ag.ny.gov/file-complaint and filing out the Consumer Frauds Complaint Form.
