Police sought the public's assistance Friday in locating a hit-and-run driver who fatally struck an 87-year-old woman walking in a crosswalk in Echo Park.
The woman was struck around 6:50 p.m. Monday as she was walking westbound inside a crosswalk at the intersection of Berkeley Avenue and Allesanro Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police said she was struck by a dark-colored Ford Transit van heading southbound on Allesanro Street, and the motorist drove off without stopping to render aid. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
"In the event of a traffic collision, motorists are required to stop, check on all parties involved, and request paramedics if medical attention is needed," police said in a statement.
"Providing contact information is essential to ensure accountability and avoid turning a traffic incident into a criminal offense."
The city offers a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the suspect.
