Florida football nearly pulled off the upset against No. 2 Georgia last week. Can the Gators give a similar scare to No. 5 Texas on the road on Saturday? Can they finish the job?
For Florida (4-4, 2-3 SEC) to pull it off, it must overcome a few injuries, including true freshman superstar quarterback DJ Lagway. The Gators hung around with the Bulldogs last week, but Lagway went down with what appeared to be a severe hamstring injury in the first half and did not return.
Initially, it was feared Lagway would be finished for his freshman season, but Florida coach Billy Napier provided a positive update about the signal caller on Monday. Lagway has been practicing since but entered this week with a questionable label on the SEC availability report.
Will Lagway play against Texas? Here's the latest on the status of Lagway, with Florida scheduled to play the Longhorns on Saturday:
ESPN's Pete Thamel states that Lagway is "not expected to significantly contribute today at Texas." Lagway was limited in practice this week for the Gators and is listed as questionable entering Saturday.
The report from Thamel does suggest Lagway could be available to play, but not at the level as he has as a freshman with 1,071 passing yards, six touchdowns and five interceptions as a passer and 37 rushes for 114 yards as a runner.
According to 247 Sports' composite rankings, Lagway was the No. 7 overall recruit and the No. 2 QB prospect in the 2024 recruiting cycle.
Yale transfer Aidan Warner finished 7 of 22 passing for 66 yards and threw the game-clinching interception in relief of Lagway. Warner is expected to be the starter with Lagway out. Graham Mertz, the starter to begin the season, is out for the season with a knee injury. Colorado State transfer Clay Millen will back up Warner.
