Liam Payne has died. On October 16, the former One Direction singer fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, sustaining injuries that authorities said were "incompatible with life." Payne was thirty-one and is survived by his seven-year-old son.

Payne's former groupmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomilson, and Zayn Malik, provided a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "We're completely devastated by the news of Liam's passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you, Liam."

Thursday morning, Payne's family released a statement to BBC and PA Media. "Liam will forever live in our hearts, and we'll remember him for his kind, funny, and brave soul. We are supporting each other the best we can as a family and ask for privacy and space at this awful time." He is best known for his role in One Direction, which disbanded in 2016. In 2017, Payne released the popular single "Strip That Down (feat. Quavo)." Two years later, he dropped his first and only album, LP1.

In the wake of his death, friends and former collaborators paid their respects online. Musician Charlie Puth shared his condolences on his Instagram story. "I am in shock right now," he wrote. "Liam was always so kind to me. He was one of the first major artists I got to work with. I cannot believe he is gone." Puth also posted a video of him and Payne laughing and wrote, "I am so upset right now, may he rest in peace."

English singer Mabel shared an Instagram story as well. "Liam, for so many years, I always knew I could call on you for support and big brotherly advice, but now you're gone," she wrote. "My thoughts and prayers are with Liam's family and friends during this time. You'll be so missed."

Tributes have continued to flood in. Here's what celebrities are saying about the late singer.
