Somerset County top playoff soccer, volleyball, XC performers for Oct. 22-24

The postseason has begun and athletes across Somerset County are already thriving. Check out who is standing out amongst the crowd.

Johnstown Christian freshman Hudson Lease bested the field in the boys' 1A race in a time of 17.44. North Star's Cash Hawkins (19:19) and Luke Hall (19:29) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Other Somerset County state qualifiers included Windber's Andrew Minahan (8th, 19:37), Meyersdale's Joe Comfort (11th, 19:52), Johnstown Christian's Jeremiah Taylor (12th, 20:10), Meyersdale's Calen Simpkins (13th, 20:11), Windber's Michael Dusack (15th, 20:42) and Meyersdale's Edison Hersch (16th, 20:43).

Athlete of the Week polls Vote for the Daily American Somerset County Athlete of the Week for Oct. 14-18

The Windber girls won the 1A team title, defeating Chestnut Ridge 24-31. The team is comprised of Pacey Oyler, Mayson Oyler, Bella Roberts, Zoey Conley, Laurel Bean, Nevaeh Podrasky and Mega Delgrande.

Johnstown Christian's Lydia Hostetter (22:08) finished fourth to qualify for states.

The Bedford boys topped Somerset 21-34 to earn the 2A team title.

Somerset's Jared Walker (4th, 18:59), Ethan Speelman (7th, 20:04), Xander Elbayly (8th, 20:32) and Gavin Smith (9th, 20:36) all qualified for states.

The Bedford girls ran past Somerset 19-41 for the 2A team championship.

Somerset's Emily Fisher (2nd, 18:40), Bethann Walker (7th, 25:27), Brooke Morocco (9th, 26:15), Luna Sosa-Ayala (11th, 29:23) and Bryanna Polakoski (12th, 30:00) all punched tickets to states.
