Wagner was recalled from AHL Colorado on Wednesday.
Wagner has drawn into two games this season, picking up three shots on goal, three hits and two PIM. The 33-year-old winger could get a longer look until the Avalanche get some injured forwards back, as Calum Ritchie was sent back to OHL Oshawa in a corresponding move.
