At WWE Crown Jewel 2024, SmackDown's WWE champion Cody Rhodes scored an arguable upset over Raw's world heavyweight champion GUNTHER to win the inaugural Men's Crown Jewel Championship.
The win came about after Rhodes went for a Super Cody Cutter, which GUNTHER managed to catch, reversing into a sleeper hold. Rhodes had a reversal of his own after that, flipping backward to put The Ring General's shoulders to the mat.
In a rare showing of respect, GUNTHER was actually receptive of a handshake, possibly because the King of the Ring acknowledges it was a legitimate victory without any shenanigans.
WWE made a point to mention again that Rhodes is the first member of his family to win a championship (albeit less of a legitimate one and more of an honorary one) on foreign soil.
Crown Jewel ended with Triple H, Women's Crown Jewel Champion Liv Morgan, and Saudi Arabia representatives celebrating in the ring.
