Suspect makes bail, arrested on new charges 9 days later

Feb. 20 -- A Cherokee resident is facing serious charges related to multiple vehicle thefts.

Earl Gresham, 47, is facing four felony charges and three misdemeanors in connection with incidents that occurred on two separate days.

The first incident occurred on Jan. 16. That incident racked up a felony aiding and abetting charge, as well as a misdemeanor second-degree trespassing charge.

According to an arrest warrant that was issued, Gresham allegedly aided and abetted "two unknown males" in the felony larceny and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The vehicle was the possession of WNC Seamless Gutters. The trespassing charge was at a home off of Old Balsam Road.

Gresham was arrested for the incident on Jan. 17. On Jan. 19, he made the $5,000 bond and was released.

On Jan. 28, another incident occurred. Following this incident, Gresham was charged with felony larceny, felony possession of stolen property, felony breaking and entering a second motor vehicle, misdemeanor larceny and misdemeanor possession of stolen property.

"The guy left his personal truck keys in his work truck. He (Gresham) got his keys and took the truck to Cherokee," Waynesville Police Lt. Billy Benhart said.

The stolen truck was a 2022 Dodge Ram 1500, valued at $33,500.

The truck Gresham is accused of breaking into was a Ford F-150.

The misdemeanor larceny and stolen property charges came from the keys that Gresham allegedly stole, valued at $30.

Benhart said these thefts aren't extremely common in Waynesville, but are something folks should be aware of.

"For the last few years, vehicle theft has been up and down," Benhart said.

Gresham remains at the Haywood County Detention Center on a $2,500 bond.
