Interstate 5 north of Redding remained closed on Wednesday due to the strong winter storm that pummeled the California-Oregon region with rain, snow and damaging wind.
Some North State highways were impassable after blizzard-like conditions knocked down trees and branches. Those conditions also were responsible for some vehicles to stall on the roads.
I-5 was closed 10 miles north of Redding at Fawndale and about 21 miles from Yreka, near the Oregon border, at Edgewood. The California Department of Transportation did not have an update for when the freeway would reopen.
Highway 299 opened back up, just east of Buckhorn Summit late Wednesday morning after a spun out big rig forced Caltrans to close all lanes.
Caltrans urged drivers to pack chains and use them when instructed during the storm, which is expected to last through Saturday.
Read below for conditions that Caltrans provided on Wednesday about freeways and state highways in Shasta and Siskiyou counties affected by the winter weather.
