An 18-year-old and his friend were found dead in a garage, Arizona officials told outlets.
Romeo Alvarez, 18, was celebrating his mom's birthday before leaving for a friend's house but never came home, officials told KPHO.
On Nov. 12, Alvarez's family requested a welfare check on their son and his 17-year-old friend, Chandler police told KPNX.
That's when officers found Alvarez and his friend, later identified by Chandler High School as Marcus Lee, dead in a garage after tracking his phone, KPHO reported.
The family believes the pair died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the outlet.
Alvarez was a freshman at Arizona State University where his friends described him as the "icebreaker of the group," AZ Central reported. He graduated in May from Dobson High School, KPNX reported.
McClatchy News reached out to Dobson High School and Arizona State University for a statement on Nov. 14 and was awaiting a response.
"Our dear sweet Romeo has unexpectedly parted from us. A brother, friend and most importantly an amazing son. Romeo was always full of life and love," a GoFundMe page said.
Chandler is about a 25-mile drive southeast of Phoenix.
