REDDING, Calif. -- This month is dedicated to early childhood literacy, and it's never too early to get children started in literacy, an essential skill for them to reach their full potential.
This is National Book Month and Shasta Reads, formerly "Read For the Record", is happening on Thursday, Sponsored by the First Five and Reach Higher Shasta.
KRCR's Mike Mangas spent some time with students in the St. Joseph school transitional kindergarten classroom, where they enjoyed "Brick by Brick", a bilingual book about a Hispanic boy whose father is a bricklayer.
The children gave Mangas some feedback on the book, all expressing that they enjoyed the story and the father in the book who built a new home and helped his family.
These children are in the "still learning to read" stage. By the fourth grade, they should be reading to learn and comprehend more on their own.
Last year, Shasta Reads reached 3,000 children, read to by 54 celebrity readers at more than 150 sites.
