Gary Robert Rampenthal passed away on March 22, 2025, at 85 years old. Born on Jan. 3, 1940, in Lena, Illinois, he lived a life defined by faith, kindness, and dedication to his family, friends and community.
A U.S. Air Force veteran, Gary served with the Strategic Air Command (SAC), manning intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). His military service instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and responsibility that he carried throughout his life.
Gary and his wife Hiroko were married nearly 62 years ago in May at the old wooden chapel on Vandenberg AFB. It was a small but meaningful ceremony, as her family and friends were in Japan and his in Illinois and Nebraska. Their marriage was a lasting partnership built on faith and devotion.
A devout Catholic, Gary's faith was at the core of everything he did. He faithfully led a prayer group for years and was a longtime member of his church choir, where his voice and guitar brought joy to those around him.
He was a talented musician and craftsman, building a guitar with his own hands as well as various Heathkit projects and computers, a testament to his patience and skill.
Gary was known for his kindness, warmth and gentle spirit. He was always willing to lend a hand and was cherished by friends, colleagues, and fellow musicians.
He spent many years at GTE before retiring, where he was respected and appreciated. After retiring, he used his love of computers to teach children at Fairlawn Elementary School in Santa Maria. Those who knew him remember his talents, unwavering faith, and generous nature.
He is survived by his wife Hiroko; daughter Anna Wobrock (Mike); brother Gene (Sandy); and two granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his daughter Lisa Rampenthal-Strauss; and his brother Gayle (Bonnie).
A brief ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 29 at Dudley-Hoffman Mortuary Santa Maria.
